Getting To

The village of Comillas, head of the municipality, is situated in the West coast of Cantabria, 48 kilometres away from Santander and between the renown villages of Santillana del Mar and San Vicente de la Barquera, the three almost essential places to visit in the region.

Recommended itineraries for people with reduced mobility:

  • From the Sobrellano parking: Located at the foot of the palace of the same name, this parking has 3 parking spaces for people with reduced mobility, as well as adapted public restrooms. From here, you can head towards the Sobrellano Palace, although the interior path of the site is gravel (small stones) and has a slope in the final stretch. If you plan to visit the Sobrellano Palace and the Pantheon Chapel, it is recommended to make a reservation in advance indicating that you will be using a wheelchair so that they can open an alternative entrance to the site for easier access. Always with prior notice by contacting the Cultural Centers of Cantabria.
From the Sobrellano parking, you can also head towards Gaudí’s Capricho, crossing behind the old “Villa Anita,” now in ruins, to reach the sidewalk on Marqués de Comillas street. After that, you must cross an irregular cobblestone section that may be uncomfortable. You can reach the traffic light intersection, “kilometer 0 of the village,” where Casa Ocejo is located, the first point of the Monumental Route.
At this intersection, the passage narrows too much to pass with a wheelchair, so to go to Gaudí’s Capricho, it is better to park at Plaza Fuente Real, which has a parking space for people with reduced mobility, or alternatively, in Travesía Ocejo, which has 4 PMR spaces.
  • From the Travesía Ocejo parking:
From this parking, which has 4 PMR spaces, you can head towards the historic center, passing through Plaza del Ángel and then Plaza Joaquín del Piélago, next to the New Town Hall and the Fountain of the Three Taps, near the cobblestone street Calle de Los Arzobispos. Alternatively, you can go up Cervantes street towards Corro Campíos, an emblematic square where the parish church of San Cristóbal and the Old Town Hall of the village are located.
From the parking, you could also go in the opposite direction towards Gaudí’s Capricho, exiting at Plaza del Ángel to the pedestrian crossing that crosses Paseo Gaudí, which leads to Fuente Real Square, from where you access the monument of Gaudí’s Capricho.
  • From the Polideportivo parking:
You could access the Puerta de los Pájaros (door of Casa Moro) and from there to the viewpoint of Santa Lucía, where there is a small hermitage and a splendid view of Comillas beach and port.
  • From the beach parking:
Seaside promenade to the port and accessible beach, with viewpoints and explanatory totems of the whaling route of Comillas.
  • From Plaza Fuente Real:
Ideal place to move towards Gaudí’s Capricho. You need to cross a sloped section until reaching the entrance to the monumental site where the ticket offices are located.
  • Parking spaces on Paseo Manuel Noriega:
From the PMR square near the gate of the Cardosa estate, where the Major Seminary rises, as well as from the PMR square located above the beach, you can see several points of interest just by moving a little, as we find ourselves on the bypass road of the village.
It is a long promenade where you can see the Gate of the Old Pontifical University and the Comillas Cemetery, as well as good views of the beach and the port.
Next to the roundabout of the Cemetery, you will find the famous giant blue letters of Comillas.
From this Paseo Manuel Noriega, you can also view the statue of the Marquis of Comillas from below.
